'Extinct' monkey rediscovered in Borneo by new expedition

Friday, January 20, 2012

An international team of scientists has found one of the rarest and least known primates in Borneo, Miller's Grizzled Langur, a species which was believed to be extinct or on the verge of extinction. The team's findings, published in the American Journal of Primatology, confirms the continued existence of this endangered monkey and reveals that it lives in an area where it was previously not known to exist.

Miller's Grizzled Langur (Presbytis hosei canicrus) is part of the small primate genus Presbytis, found across Borneo, Sumatra, Java and the Thai-Malay Peninsula. In Borneo, P.h. canicrus is only found in a small corner of the county's north east and its habitat has suffered from fires, human encroachment and conversion of land for agriculture and mining.

The team's expedition took to them to Wehea Forest in East Kalimantan, Borneo, a large 38,000 ha area of mostly undisturbed rainforest. Wehea contains at least nine known species of non-human primate, including the Bornean orangutan and gibbon.

"Discovery of P.h canicrus was a surprise since Wehea Forest lies outside of this monkey's known range. Future research will focus on estimating the population density for P.h. canicrus in Wehea and the surrounding forest," said Brent Loken, from Simon Fraser University Canada. "Concern that the species may have gone extinct was first raised in 2004, and a search for the monkey during another expedition in 2008 supported the assertion that the situation was dire."

By conducting observations at mineral licks where animals congregate and setting up camera traps in several locations, the expedition confirmed that P. h canicrus continues to survive in areas west of its previously recorded geographic range. The resulting photos provide the first solid evidence demonstrating that its geographic range extends further than previously thought.

"It was a challenge to confirm our finding as there are so few pictures of this monkey available for study," said Loken. "The only description of Miller's Grizzled Langur came from museum specimens. Our photographs from Wehea are some of the only pictures that we have of this monkey."

"East Kalimantan can be a challenging place to conduct research, given the remoteness of many remaining forested areas, so it isn't surprising that so little is known about this primate," said Dr. Stephanie Spehar, Assistant Professor of Anthropology at University of Wisconsin Oshkosh. "We are very grateful to our local partners. This discovery represents the hard work, dedication, and collaboration of Western and Indonesian scientists, students, NGOs, as well as local communities and government."

"While our finding confirms the monkey still exists in East Kalimantan, there is a good chance that it remains one of the world's most endangered primates," concluded Loken. "I believe it is a race against time to protect many species in Borneo. It is difficult to adopt conservation strategies to protect species when we don't even know the extent of where they live. We need more scientists in the field working on understudied species such as Miller's Grizzled Langur, clouded leopards and sun bears."

Breast Cancer Treatment Causing Severe Lifestyle Changes ...

The advancements in the medical science have made it possible for the doctors and surgeons to save innocent lives from deadly cancer. But do you know that the women who have been saved from cancer in their earlier periods of life have suffered severe consequences?

Women, who are undergoing chemotherapy surgeries, are at higher risk of getting their reproductive system damaged. They have to plan their dates. Nicole Vazquez, who is one of those women who survived breast cancer in their earlier age, is struggling hard to cop up with her sex life.

While sharing her experience of having chemotherapy, Nicole Vazquez said,? I had a medi-port sticking out of my chest that I had to cover up? I didn?t have a boyfriend and now I would be bald. And after the chemo, I really looked sick. Self-image is a really big deal?.

She shared that soon after going through the chemotherapy she turned depressed and lost her self confidence. There is no doubt that breast cancer treatments have helped many women to live longer. But one also has to believe that the treatment does come with side effects or reactions.

Those women who go for breast cancer treatment before crossing 50 has to deal with a changed life style. Changes in life like, weight gain, reduced physical activity and psychological stress are some of the issues which a woman has to face.

According to the American Cancer Society, breast cancer has become most common form of cancer among women, which causes death to a large number of women all over the world. It is hoped that with the passage of time, improvement in the breast cancer treatment would be made so that the negative aftermath of the treatment could be reduced.

Portable dock lets you scan documents into your iPad on the go

We still need scanners, but for many of us they've become too unwieldy to fit neatly into our increasingly mobile computing set-ups. But this new iPad-friendly device could be the last scanner you'll ever need.

The iConvert Scanner for iPad is the very definition of simplicity. You simply dock your iPad or iPad 2 onto the sleek device, fire up the iConvert iPad app, and feed your documents into it. Afterwards the scanned high-resolution 300dpi document can be saved on the iPad or emailed like any other document. This level of ease-of-use could actually make scanning a bit fun again.

The iConvert Scanner for iPad will go on sale next month for $149.99 here, but in the meantime you can see it in action in the video below.

Actor Wahlberg apologizes for 9/11 comments (AP)

NEW YORK ? Actor Mark Wahlberg has apologized for asserting that he would have stopped terrorists from flying an airliner into New York's World Trade Center on Sept. 11 if he had been on the plane.

The star of the film "Contraband" issued his apology Wednesday after comments he made to Men's Journal drew criticism.

He told an interviewer in the February issue that had he been on American Airlines Flight 11 with his children "it wouldn't have went down like it did." Terrorists flew the plane with 92 people aboard into the north tower on Sept. 11, 2001.

In his apology, Wahlberg said to speculate was "ridiculous to begin with." He said that to suggest he "would have done anything differently than the passengers on that plane was irresponsible."

Quincy councilor wants energy-savings evidence

A city councilor renewed his push for the city to break down whether it has reaped any energy-cost savings in the city buildings Honeywell International did work in under a controversial $30 million contract.

In reaching the deal with Quincy in 2007, Honeywell guaranteed that the city would, over 20 years, make back all it spent. Councilor-at-large Douglas Gutro is pushing for data that would show whether the city has saved anything to date.

?It?s been more than four years and the council has received no information as to whether any of the investments made through this Honeywell contract have indeed achieved the reductions,? Gutro said. ?I have asked for some simple yet comprehensive updates. ...My patience is much thinner.?

The city has been relatively mum on Gutro?s requests while the attorney general?s office investigates whether Quincy was shortchanged on the Honeywell contract and scrutinizes data and prices the company provided the city in making its guarantees.

City Solicitor James Timmins said answering the question of whether Quincy has saved money on energy in the three dozen buildings Honeywell has touched is ?not a simple question.?

?I think that everyone on the city council is fully aware of all the reasons why it is not a simple question,? he said.

Honeywell has stood by its guarantee, so long as the city abides by the terms of a separate $22 million agreement that puts it in control of maintaining the equipment. Mayor Thomas Koch has refused to sign the maintenance agreement and has hired outside vendors to do some work related to Honeywell-installed equipment.

Gutro?s resolution, submitted to the city council Tuesday, gives Koch 30 days to submit:

A list of buildings where equipment acquired under the contract was installed, along with the type of equipment installed in each building.

The baseline water use, energy use and associated cost data for each building prior to the installations.

Four years worth of actual energy-use data and water-use data by month and year for each building starting after the installations.

A report quantifying energy, water, and financial savings on an annual basis and over the life of the contract for each building.

A long-term maintenance plan that would guarantee the performance of equipment installed under the contract. The plan also would project what the maintenance would cost the city.
