Collision on La. waterway causes explosion, blaze

LAFITTE, La. (AP) ? The U.S. Coast Guard says a tug boat and a barge collided with a pipeline south of New Orleans, injuring four and leading to a blaze visible from miles away.

Ensign Tanner Stiehl told The Associated Press late Tuesday that the collision occurred at about 6 p.m. Central on Bayou Perot, about 30 miles south of New Orleans.

Stiehl said the Coast Guard hasn't "identified what was in the pipeline and who owned it."

He said four people were able to exit the tug boat.

Stiehl said the Coast Guard and local authorities are responding to the fire. He said crews "are still debating how we're going to handle that."

WWL-TV reported that all four people on the vessel were accounted for, but that one person was severely burned and was being treated at West Jefferson Medical Center.
